The Power of Food

Ok so I have accepted a challenge of reading the Bible from cover to cover in a year. Feel free to join in on Facebook, Bible Alive 365 .

The Power of Food

Food with-drawls can make people crazy.  Have you ever noticed that you get upset when you are hungry? You can’t think straight, you are easily aggravated,  your head hurts, you make rash decisions, and sometimes unwise decisions. Food has serious power because it is a nutrient of the flesh. Food feeds the flesh, it does nothing for your spirit man, natural food that is. In my personal opinion, I believe that is why fasting is so important. It is denying the flesh.

Back to the lack of food making one foolish…

Genesis 25 (The Message)

One day Jacob was cooking a stew. Esau came in from the field, starved. Esau said to Jacob, “Give me some of that red stew—I’m starved!” That’s how he came to be called Edom (Red).

31 Jacob said, “Make me a trade: my stew for your rights as the firstborn.”

32 Esau said, “I’m starving! What good is a birthright if I’m dead?”

33-34 Jacob said, “First, swear to me.” And he did it. On oath Esau traded away his rights as the firstborn. Jacob gave him bread and the stew of lentils. He ate and drank, got up and left. That’s how Esau shrugged off his rights as the firstborn.

This is a clear example of the power of food. Esau sold his birthright just to fill his belly. Adam and Eve lost their home in the garden of Eden as well as their original purpose (to keep order in the garden not work by the sweat of their brow), just for a quick bite.  Now, what will you loose for a mere morsel of food or a moment of fleshly pleasure?

One thing Genesis has taught me thus far is the reward of being obedient. God rewards greatly those who obey him, for generations to come. Abraham is that greatest example of that. God is also a God of wrath, and he will punish those who disobey. Don’t allow your flesh to cause you to disobey the word of the Lord, don’t sacrifice your purpose, your home, your family, yourself just for a moment of guilty pleasure. The quick bite is not worth it.

Next time you get hungry and your flesh starts to kick up and you feel that you are “starved” and that you will do anything for a quick bite or a full belly, remember this

Matthew 4:4

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

“For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.” 1 Phil. 3:18-19 NIV 1984.
